I Crashed My Drone. What Now?
After a crash, the first question is not “does it still turn on?” It is whether the aircraft and lithium battery are safe to handle and whether hidden damage could make the next flight worse.

Quick answer
After a crash, power down and inspect before trying to fly again. Treat any swollen, leaking, dented, punctured, crushed, overheated or water-damaged lithium battery as unsafe: do not use or charge it. Replace damaged propellers. If the aircraft has structural, gimbal, motor, sensor or internal damage — or you are simply unsure after a meaningful impact — DJI recommends professional diagnosis rather than another test flight.
The important bits
- If a battery is damaged, hot, swelling, leaking or has been submerged, do not charge or reuse it.
- Do not straighten and reuse a damaged propeller; replace it.
- Check arms, motors, gimbal, camera and shell for movement, cracks or deformation.
- Water damage is different from a dry bump: remove the battery where safe, do not power the aircraft back on, and arrange assessment.
- Back up flight records, photos and useful details before a repair process.
- If a crash was hard enough to make you question structural or internal damage, do not “just hover it and see”.
First: make the battery safe
Lithium batteries deserve priority after an impact. DJI advises checking for leakage or swelling after a collision and not using a battery that shows those signs. Fire and Rescue NSW goes further for general lithium-ion safety: a battery or device that is swollen, leaking, cracked, dented, punctured, crushed, overheated or water-damaged should not be used or charged.
If the battery is smoking, off-gassing, very hot or involved in fire, move away from danger and follow emergency guidance; call Triple Zero (000) for a fire or immediate threat. Do not carry a suspect hot battery into the house to inspect it more closely.
Do not put a damaged lithium battery in the bin
Lithium-ion batteries can start fires in garbage trucks and waste facilities. Fire and Rescue NSW says damaged batteries should not go in household rubbish, recycling or normal battery collection bins. Leaking or damaged batteries that are not overheated or off-gassing can be taken using the specific damaged-battery process to a Community Recycling Centre or Household Chemical CleanOut event.
The exact handling depends on the condition of the battery, so use current NSW fire-service/EPA guidance rather than improvising with a damaged pack.
Inspect the propellers — and be strict
A propeller is cheap compared with an aircraft. If a blade is chipped, cracked, bent, heavily scuffed or has taken a meaningful strike, replace it. DJI specifically recommends replacing damaged propellers or propeller guards before take-off.
Do not heat, bend or “balance out” a visibly damaged folding propeller. A small deformation becomes a large vibration at flight RPM and can load the motor, gimbal and flight controller.
Look for structural damage
With the battery removed, compare arms and hinges side to side. Look for hairline cracks, a motor that sits at a different angle, a shell seam that has opened, loose parts or anything that flexes when it should not. Spin motors gently by hand only if the manufacturer’s design allows it; they should not grind or bind.
Check the gimbal and camera without forcing them through their travel. A camera sitting crooked, gimbal arm deformation, strong vibration, blurry imagery or self-test failure after impact is a reason for diagnosis rather than another flight.
If it went into water, stop the “does it still work?” experiment
DJI’s current water-damage guidance says to remove the battery, dry the aircraft in a cool ventilated place and not power it back on after drying; it recommends sending the aircraft for diagnosis. Water can leave corrosion and conductive contamination even when the outside looks fine.
For the battery, treat liquid ingress as damage. Fire and Rescue NSW also classifies submerged or water-affected lithium batteries as damaged.
Save the useful evidence
Before sending an aircraft for service, keep the information that may help explain what happened. Sync or preserve the flight record if available. Save photos of the aircraft, the crash location and any app warnings. Back up photos and videos stored on internal memory because DJI warns devices may be formatted during repair.
If you have DJI Care Refresh, check the current terms for your exact aircraft before choosing a normal repair or replacement route. Collision and water damage are among the scenarios DJI lists for camera-drone coverage, but fees, eligibility and flyaway coverage vary.
Should I do a test hover?
Not automatically. DJI’s post-collision guidance says a drop or collision can cause structural or internal electronic damage that creates later flight-safety risks, and it recommends diagnosis when aircraft damage is involved.
If the incident was truly minor and the only issue is a clearly replaceable sacrificial part such as a propeller, follow your model’s manual after replacement and complete all ground checks and app self-checks before considering flight. If an arm, motor, gimbal, battery, sensor or body took a significant hit, a “quick hover” puts an unverified aircraft back into the air and can turn an inexpensive repair into a second crash.
Work out why it crashed before you repeat the flight
Repairing the hardware is only half the job. Was the aircraft flying backward into something outside the camera view? Did Sport mode remove obstacle avoidance? Was RTH set for the site? Did wind make the return difficult? Did you lose orientation, fly too close to a branch or rely on sensors to see a wire?
If you cannot explain the event, review the flight record and conditions before returning to the same scenario. The valuable outcome of a crash is changing the decision that caused it, not simply fitting new propellers.
When professional assessment is the sensible call
Arrange manufacturer or authorised service when there is visible structural damage, a hard impact, water ingress, motor/gimbal abnormality, unexplained app errors, unstable hover, strong vibration or any doubt about the battery or flight-critical parts. DJI’s online repair process accepts aircraft that have been collided, dropped, crashed, water damaged or otherwise malfunctioned.
