Drone Flight 101: Your First Flight, Step by Step

Your first flight should be deliberately boring. A wide open site, simple movements and a generous battery margin teach you more than trying cinematic moves straight away.

For a first flight, choose a legal open area, check the aircraft and weather, wait for a confirmed Home Point, lift into a low hover and spend most of the battery learning orientation close to you. Do not make distance, height or intelligent flight modes the goal. The first win is landing with the drone, your confidence and your understanding all intact.

Before you leave home

Charge the aircraft batteries, controller and phone or tablet if your setup uses one. Make sure the flight app opens and you are signed in. Install a memory card if required and check that firmware or account prompts are not waiting to steal half of your session at the park.

Then check the location. Use a CASA-verified drone safety app, check the land manager’s rules and look at the weather. The best first-flight site is wide, open and uninteresting: no crowd, no road running through it, no line of trees you feel tempted to fly behind and no need to launch from sand or long wet grass.

Do a physical aircraft check

Before fitting or powering the battery, look at the aircraft rather than assuming a new drone is automatically ready. Check each propeller for chips, cracks, distortion or looseness. Make sure the arms are fully unfolded, the gimbal protector is removed where applicable and nothing blocks the motors or sensors.

DJI’s own pre-flight guidance also recommends confirming battery power, propeller condition, controller link, app self-check status and the refreshed Home Point before take-off.

Set up the important safety items first

You do not need to understand every menu. For flight one, focus on the settings that can change what the aircraft does when something unexpected happens.

  • Confirm the Home Point is recorded at the correct place.
  • Know what the signal-loss action is set to do: Return-to-Home, hover or land, depending on the model/setup.
  • Understand the RTH altitude or RTH mode your model uses.
  • Check obstacle avoidance is in the mode you expect, remembering Sport mode can disable it on many DJI aircraft.
  • Confirm maximum altitude/distance settings are not doing something surprising.
  • Look for any compass, IMU, GNSS, battery or vision-system warning before launch.

Take off and stop at a low hover

Lift to roughly head height or a little above, then do nothing for a moment. Is the drone holding position? Does the camera horizon look normal? Are there warnings? Does the aircraft respond predictably to a tiny control input?

That 20-second pause is valuable. It gives you a safe opportunity to notice a propeller vibration, location problem or setup issue before the drone is 80 metres away.

Learn the sticks without travelling far

With the nose pointing away from you, use very small inputs: up, down, forward, backward, left and right. Then practise a gentle yaw turn. Keep the aircraft close enough that orientation is obvious.

Next, turn the drone 90 degrees and repeat. Finally, point the nose toward yourself. This is where new pilots discover that left and right feel reversed because you are now looking at the front of the aircraft. Do not rush past that discomfort — working through it close to you is exactly how orientation becomes instinctive.

Fly a box before you fly a “shot”

A simple rectangular circuit teaches more than an automated orbit on day one. Fly forward, stop, turn 90 degrees, fly the next side and repeat. Try to stop in the same places and keep a constant height.

When that feels easy, fly the same shape while keeping the camera pointed roughly at the centre. You are now beginning to coordinate yaw and translation — the foundation of smooth video — without letting the aircraft disappear into the distance.

Pay attention to the wind on the return leg

A drone can look extremely capable while flying downwind because the air mass is helping it. The problem appears when you turn home and ask it to fight the wind on a lower battery.

For early flights, keep the drone upwind or crosswind where practical, stay close and return with a large battery reserve. Forecast wind is only part of the story: the Bureau of Meteorology notes that gusts can be around 40 per cent stronger than average winds and wind usually increases with height.

Practise Return-to-Home before you need it

RTH is a safety system, not a panic button you should meet for the first time during a signal loss. With the aircraft nearby, high battery and an open return path, trigger RTH and watch what your particular model does. Then practise cancelling it and taking over.

Newer DJI aircraft can calculate sophisticated return paths when their sensing systems and lighting allow it; older or degraded conditions may rely more heavily on preset altitude and direct return behaviour. Your manual matters.

Land before the battery makes the decision for you

Do not stretch the first flight for “one more shot”. Bring the drone back while you still have time to reposition, deal with a person walking into the landing area or respond to a wind change. Land on a clean, stable surface and stop the motors before approaching.

A calm landing with 25 or 30 per cent remaining teaches better habits than a dramatic low-battery arrival. Exact margins depend on aircraft, wind, temperature and distance, so treat battery as a planning resource rather than a countdown timer.

What to practise on flights two and three

Repeat the basics until they feel boring, then add one new variable at a time.

  • Consistent take-offs and landings.
  • Nose-in hovering and orientation.
  • Circles and figure-eights.
  • Smooth combined yaw/forward movement.
  • Camera tilt while maintaining a flight path.
  • RTH from different safe positions.
  • Judging wind and planning the return before the app tells you to.

The goal is not to be fearless

Confident flying is not ignoring risk. It is knowing what the aircraft is doing, keeping enough margin that you have options and recognising when a flight is becoming unnecessarily difficult. Your first few flights should make the controls less mentally expensive so you have more attention left for airspace, people, weather and composition.
